"Ascii Hex" Application of Convert Program Software

ASCI character conversion to Hexadecimal and Decimal outputs is one of the main 6 calculation areas of the "convert" metric calculator.  This section can be seen in the image above as the middle upper section.  The way that this section operates is that if you enter a different value in any of the three text entry areas of "Hex", "Dec" or "ASCI" and then press the enter key the other two areas will calculate.  For example, if you enter an "a" in the "ASCI" text area and hit the enter key on your keyboard, then as shown in the above image  "Hex" will display the hexadecimal value for the ascii letter "a" which is 61 in hex, and "Dec" will display the decimal value for the ascii letter "a" which is 97.  But alternately, you could have entered "61" in the "Hex" area for example and all three text boxes would give the same results, or you could have entered "91" in the "Dec" decimal box and achieved the same all three answers.

The ascii / hexadecimal / decimal converter works up to 4 ascci characters, or a value of 4294967295 in decimal, or a high of "FFFFFFFF" in hexadecimal.  So, you could also enter four letters of ascii code into "ASCI" such as "Help" and the program will tell you that that value in hexadecimal coding is "48656C70"

For ascii output, it of course will only do the characters it recognizes - that are part of a normal text output.  But note that if you ask what a hexadecimal "20" character is (or decimal value 32) that the ascii code will appear blank.  However, if you look closer, you will see that it is a blank.  A decimal value of 32 is an ascii blank space.

Metric Conversion Software

The metric conversion software screen above is one of five calculators that come with the convert 2000 software package from rpsoft 2000 software.  As you probably notice in the above metric conversion screen shot, conversion capabilities are for weight, distance, volume, temperature, hexadecimal / ascii / decimal, and ppm / Sigma.  This program works "by area".  Basically, if you clear a text input / output box, and enter a number and then hit the "enter" key while the cursor is still inside the text, all of the other items in "the area" that you are in will re-calculate.  You can clear all of the text using the "clear" button with your mouse left click, or you can clear a single text input by using your mouse to put the cursor inside of that text box and then using the escape "esc" key.

Hexadecimal / ascii / decimal is to four bytes (four ascii characters).  General accuracy is to about 4 significant figures - or about 0.1%.  Help screen is of course provided.  Switch to any of the other five calculators by clicking on the calculator of your choice in the "Calculator Type" pull-down menu.

Overall - Convert 2000 is a collection of Six Calculators

• Business Calculator:  A computer calculator with some excellent features.  It includes a simulated paper tape readout on screen that shows calculations as you go - and it can also print to a default printer.  It also includes 10 memory locations that are visible to help you remember which memory value is which.
• Metric to English Calculator: that includes conversions for:  weight, distance, volume, temperature, hexadecimal to ascii and decimal, and quality sigma to ppm
• Mortgage Loan Calculator: that allows you to calculate any of the four items of:  Principal (amount of loan) , interest rate, term of loan, or payment amount by entering the other  three.  An amortization schedule that also allows save and print is included.  Many options.
• Quality Calculator:  Many Handheld calculators will do statistics.  This one does not.  What it does do is include many items not found on hand held calculators including mtbf calculations, and the relationship between mtbf, mttr and system availability.  Also includes ppm to sigma calculations plus Fahrenheit to Celsius conversion.
• Chinese Calendar Calculator:  This calculator is a simplistic approximation of the Chinese tradition of naming years after animals and how it relates to our own Gregorian solar calendar years.  It is a simple approximation, and is mostly included for fun.
• Custom Calculator:  Allows 9 lines of programmable calculations.  It does not include all programmable functions, but includes many of the common ones such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, %, logs, natural logs, exponentiation, and more.  It does not allow parenthesis but does allow multi-line information transfer at least in a downward direction.  This can be set up for many common small business needs.  Examples included within the calculator.

Overall - Of course, with differences in definitions and rounding techniques, you will need to check settings and ensure suitability of these calculators for your own needs.  However, this software can be an exceptional help when you need it and it comes at a very low package price.  Switch from one calculator to another by simply clicking on the calculator you wish on the pull-down menu that it is on each main calculator screen.  An option file can remember your settings if you wish it to be saved.  Load and save of multiple options is also provided for.
