The above screen shows the programming setup for the currency exchange example we discussed on the last page.  If you did not see that page and wish to see it, click here.

Left to Right / Top Line to Bottom Line

The direction of calculations are line by line with inputs as needed put in by the user at the left.  Answers will be output on the right.  For lines that depend on the answers from other lines, remember that calculations are done top to bottom.  So, we can only reference lines that are above the line we are working on.  Formulas always operate left to right.   Some explanations of the formulas used will follow.  Note that there are only two kinds of formulas we are using here for currency exchange.  One type, like line 1,8, and 9 (a1,a8,a9 inputs) operates only on a single line basis.  Whatever is entered on the left is operated on by the formula in the center and then output in an answer on the right.  The other type is one where one input can give multiple line outputs.  For example here, an input in line 1 (a1) will cause outputs in the top 7 lines (b1,b2,b3,b4,b5,b6 and b7).  So, we will only discuss a few of the lines, since they are so similar.

  • line 1 - the formula is just "0.5347".  The symbol for multiplication is indeed "x" or "*", but this calculator will assume that if the operator is missing, that a multiplication is assumed.  So, then, line 1 will multiply whatever is input in a1 by 0.5347 and will output the answer on the right, next to "British Pounds" at b1.

  • lines 2 thru 7 - these lines just key from the information on line 1 (a1), the number of US Dollars.  Let us take the formula in line 2, which is "za1x106.36".  An explanation of this is as below:

  • "z": Since we do not need an input this line and are going to use the information from line 1 (a1) we just want to zero the input by using "z" in case the user did enter a value there.  "z" makes the input zero and leaves us free to do other things.

  • "a1" - the a1 means takes the number that was input on line 1, a1, and use that data instead

  • "x" means multiply

  • "106.36" - is what we are going to multiply times "a1" - the number of US dollars - in order to get an output for each of those other countries currencies

  • line 8 - this is like line 1 again - a single line operation.  Whatever is input in line 8 (a8) will be multiplied by 1.8701 in order to get the output in US Dollars.

What happens when the exchange rates change?  You just go into this setup screen and change the factors - such as 0.547 and the others.

Note that whenever we use a value from another line, we ensure that that line is higher on the screen.  That is because once we enter the data on the left side as needed and click "Calculate All" on the main screen, that the calculations are done top to bottom.  So, the lower calculations can reference ones higher than them - only.

Much power - and remember - this is only one of the 5 calculators included with this software.  The mortgage / load calculator with its amortization schedule should be very handy also in the Real Estate Business.
