To an extent, business strategy can be similar to the rules of science.  In science the good universities teach that we should always keep an open mind, that life continually changes and that we must always understand and investigate the changes.  And science also teaches to never begin with the answer we are hoping for since that will damage the investigation, but to keep to logic and math and reality and to be always fair and honest.

I might imagine that many would agree with that - keeping an open mind.  But that is often easier spoken than done.  One of the reasons why a consultant might find it easier to get to the basics in a business is that they are not themselves emotionally tied into it - at least at the beginning.  Therefore they can simply look at facts, numbers and relationships within the company to get to some good advice.  For the same reason, it has been said that it is often not a good idea to invest your own money, since you will worry so much about it that you will not make good decisions, but that a stock broker who is not emotionally involved can do better.  But let me also add, that not every stock broker is a good one.  One must be careful there as well to choose the right broker, and / or the right consultant.

I also believe that while many companies of course have similar challenges that they may face, each company will have somewhat different issues.  All of us are unique human beings, and therefore some companies will do better at some needed skills than others.  The only way to find out is again for a consultant to come in with no quick packaged answers, but to first learn the unique situation that that individual business may have.  Therefore do not be surprised if my goal is to first learn who you are, where your company is at along its goals, and ask what your plans and dreams are before giving answers.  Answers will be different for different companies.

I also believe that there should be a loyalty to the people hiring us.  That means that that person or person(s) should be given the best information possible and also in private.  There may be cases where the owners or those doing the hiring may like the ideas and act on them.  Or those that hire might decide to act on them later after some events happen.  Or the owners may decide to say, thank you, but that they will go in a different direction.

CUSTOMER TREATMENT

We also believe that the customer who hires us is very important to us.  We also wish to make it a point to 'never talk down to them".  And if you think we do, please let us know. We do not wish to be upsetting by our own attitude. We also firmly believe that there is no reason for any human to talk down to another.  All of us humans have different skill sets.  While mine might be business, profit, quality, some math and the like, I should never be asked for advice on medical surgery and please never ask me to be your dentist.  We each have our skills.  Just because one of us know more in a given field than another, does not make us superior.  The other people are also better in other fields.  That is what makes the world work. We each can be experts in different fields.  And yet, if we are all polite we can combine those skills to make business ventures complete.
