HARD 17

BLACKJACK TERMS DICTIONARY

HARD 17

In the game of Blackjack, the term "hard 17" usually refers to what the dealer must do on every hand.  Dealers within casinos, unlike the players, must follow certain rules.  And of course it is good to know the rules they follow.  In this case the number 17 refers to the number of points that the dealer must hit until reaching it.  The word "hard" would imply that the dealer must hit a "soft 17".  A " hard 17"  is one in which any aces in the hand count as only 1 point and not 11 points.  A soft 17 would be a hand that totaled 17 points only because an ace in the hand counted as 11 points.

For the most part, it is an advantage to the dealer to hit soft 17 hands but to stop at hard 17 point hands or at soft 18 hands.  And that is now what the majority of casinos seem to do.

Blackjack book   Book: The Complete Blackjack Survival Kit (click for info)
eBook Available from Google Play, Amazon Kindle, Barnes and Noble Nook

Does this book tell you how to win? No. It does tell you how you might get the odds in your favor, and gives some strategy tables for some of the more common blackjack games played in casinos. It also tries to explain using math and simulations why getting the odds in your favor may indeed improve your play, but why no one we know of can guarantee winning all of the time.
